Gli anni 80, che tornano ciclicamente. In passato, oltre alla classifica di OndaRock dei migliori dischi degli 80’s, vi abbiamo proposto altre liste analoghe, come la Top 500 degli Lp di Uncut e la lista delle 200 migliori canzoni degli anni 80 secondo Pitchfork. Stavolta, a metterli sotto la sua lente è il magazine Ultimate Classic Rock, che si è imbarcato in una missione decisamente insidiosa: stabilire i 100 migliori album rock del decennio. “La musica degli anni Ottanta viene generalmente associata ai suoni computerizzati e alle atmosfere al neon di Mtv, ma quel decennio fu molto più vario di quanto si pensi – sottolinea Nick DeRiso nell’introduzione – I primi anni furono dominati dagli ultimi sviluppi del post-punk, ben prima che i videoclip diventassero un fenomeno di massa. Artisti storici con radici che risalivano agli anni Sessanta continuavano a conquistare le classifiche, tra cui Rolling Stones, Paul McCartney e Pink Floyd. Anche alcuni dei protagonisti più costanti degli anni Settanta non cedettero il passo con l’affermazione di Mtv, inclusi Journey, Styx, Foreigner e Fleetwood Mac. A metà degli anni Ottanta, Bruce Springsteen, Dire Straits, John Fogerty, Van Halen, Peter Gabriel e Phil Collins erano ovunque. Ma stavano emergendo nuovi nomi e il rock iniziava a frammentarsi. Il synth-pop lasciava spazio al rock alternativo e alle diverse evoluzioni dell’hard rock e dell’heavy metal. Mötley Crüe e poi Guns N’ Roses svilupparono ulteriormente la potenza graffiante che aveva caratterizzato i successi degli Ac/Dc nei primi anni Ottanta. R.E.M., U2 e artisti importanti ma meno noti al grande pubblico come Hüsker Dü e Kate Bush seguirono percorsi del tutto personali. L’hard rock si trasformò in modi entusiasmanti, dalle lunghe narrazioni storiche degli Iron Maiden al fulmineo genio thrash dei primi Metallica. Allo stesso tempo, artisti affermatisi negli anni Settanta come Don Henley, Aerosmith, Kiss e Paul Simon cambiarono profondamente nel corso del decennio. Robert Plant, Van Halen e Black Sabbath aggiornarono il proprio approccio musicale, mentre Hall & Oates si inserirono perfettamente nello spirito del tempo.
