Per celebrare l’anniversario del debutto di Bruce Springsteen con “Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.” così come il suo servizio di copertina sugli Stone Roses, il magazine Uncut ha rilanciato la sua classifica dei “100 best debut albums” di sempre, “da Elvis Presley a Eminem, dagli Arctic Monkeys ai Led Zeppelin“. Una lista edita originariamente nel numero di agosto 2006. Si tratta di “cento sorprendenti esplosioni di gloria che hanno rivelato i protagonisti del rock e rivoluzionato il mondo della musica”, scrive Uncut. “Dal primo disco di Elvis Presley nel 1956 fino all’elettrizzante arrivo degli Arctic Monkeys cinquant’anni dopo, persiste nel rock una fascinazione per lo shock della novità, per l’idea che possa ancora produrre svolte storiche decisive. I debutti qui raccolti rientrano in diverse categorie. Alcuni rappresentano inizi relativamente modesti, con pochi indizi di ciò che i loro autori diventeranno e realizzeranno in seguito. Così, l’album omonimo di Bob Dylan è lontanissimo dal brillante carosello di ‘Blonde On Blonde‘, mentre il primo disco dei Beatles è culturalmente distante da ‘Sgt Pepper’s‘ quanto Gerry & The Pacemakers lo sono dai Pink Floyd“, ricorda il magazine. “Al contrario, ci sono artisti che non sono mai riusciti a eguagliare il risultato definitivo del loro esordio – sottolinea ancora Uncut – ‘Marquee Moon‘ dei Television, per esempio, o ‘The Lexicon Of Love‘ degli Abc, sono opere talmente compiute da non lasciare spazio a ulteriori sviluppi. Guns N’ Roses e The Stone Roses, nel frattempo, sono più o meno crollati sotto il peso dell’adorazione precoce. Molti dei debutti presenti nella lista – come quelli di PJ Harvey, Spiritualized, Roxy Music e Byrds – funzionano invece come indicatori formidabili di ciò che i loro autori avrebbero costruito e perfezionato negli anni successivi”.
