La classifica delle 100 migliori canzoni Motown di sempre secondo Far Out Magazine

La saga della Motown è una delle esperienze discografiche più affascinanti della storia della popular music. Il magazine Far Out ha deciso di dedicarle un approfondimento, compilando un’ambiziosa classifica intitolata “The 100 greatest Motown songs of all time”. “Fin dalla sua fondazione nel 1959, all’ombra industriale di Detroit, nel Michigan, la Motown Records è sempre stata molto più di una semplice etichetta discografica – sottolinea Ben Forrest nell’introduzione – Nella storia della musica, soprattutto dal punto di vista del pubblico pop, le case discografiche non hanno mai goduto dello stesso prestigio o dello stesso potere degli artisti presenti nei loro cataloghi. La Motown, però, cambiò tutto. Il suo enigmatico leader, Berry Gordy, conosceva a fondo il mondo dell’R&B e del soul, ma prima di ogni altra cosa era un uomo d’affari. Questo significava che, invece di mettere sotto contratto artisti già affermati sul campo di battaglia delle classifiche pop, Gordy preferiva puntare soprattutto su sconosciuti, trasformandoli in star del pop e del soul all’interno degli studi e degli uffici di Hitsville USA. Nel corso degli anni dalle porte della Motown passò una quantità impressionante di artisti destinati a diventare leggendari, e l’etichetta si trasformò in un rifugio fondamentale e insostituibile per musicisti come Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye e Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson e Lionel Richie, fino ad alcune presenze decisamente più imprevedibili, come Frankie Valli… Nel frattempo Gordy riuscì a realizzare il suo progetto di costruire un vero impero del pop: per gran parte degli anni 60 e fino agli anni 70, la Motown divenne una presenza pressoché costante nelle classifiche americane. Dagli studi di Hitsville uscirono centinaia di successi da Top 10, che lanciarono moltissime star ma, soprattutto, consolidarono la reputazione della Motown come autentica istituzione della musica pop… La Motown funzionava come le catene di montaggio dell’industria automobilistica di Detroit, producendo durante il suo periodo d’oro una quantità di materiale senza eguali. Per questo è difficile stilare una vera classifica di tutti i singoli passati attraverso l’etichetta, ma Far Out non si è mai tirata indietro davanti a una sfida. Ecco quindi le 100 migliori espressioni della produzione Motown, dagli esordi fortemente influenzati dal doo-wop fino al pop dalle tinte al neon degli anni 80. Anche se la Motown Records esiste ancora nel XXI secolo, seppure ormai soprattutto nel nome, questa classifica prende in considerazione esclusivamente la produzione compresa tra la nascita della Tamla nel 1959 e la vendita dell’etichetta da parte di Berry Gordy nel 1988″.
